Comanche Peaks Wilderness
Located in the Roosevelt National Forest in Colorado.
Added to the National Wilderness Preservation System by Congress in 1980, this area was named for the
prominent 12,702 foot peak. The 67,000 acre wilderness features lodgepole and spruce-fir forests below
expanses of alpine tundra and high cirques. Many scenic trails provide access into the area that borders
Rocky Mountain National Park to the north. Elevations range from 8,000 to 12,700 feet. Elk, mule deer,
black bear, coyote, bobcat, and smaller mammals inhabit the area. Chickadees, hummingbirds, grey jays,
and hawks are also present. Streams contain native cutthroat trout and introduced rainbow, brook, and
brown trout.
