San Mateo Canyon Wilderness
Located in the Cleveland National
Forest in California.
The 39,700 acre San Mateo Canyon Wilderness lies in the mountains south of Highway 74 between Camp
Pendleton and Lake Elsinore. The area is characterized by moderate to steep terrain. Vegetation ranges
from chaparral on slopes, riparian vegetation in stream channels and oak woodland at lower elevations.
The area is accessible by several routes off Highway 74 and by truck trails. Some access routes may be
closed in wet weather. Permits are required year round. The best times to visit are spring and fall. Wood
fires are prohibited. Portable stoves are permitted.
