Monarch Wilderness

Located in the Sequoia and Sierra National Forests in California.

The 44,900 acre Monarch Wilderness was formerly called the High Sierra Primitive Area. The area was enlarged and renamed in 1984. The wilderness is a rugged area with high steep ridges and deep canyons. There are mountain meadows, shallow lakes and spectacular multicolored geological formations contributing to the area's overall beauty. The area is extremely scenic. Elevations range from 2,300 feet to 11,077 feet at Hogback Peak. Vegetation includes chaparral and oak woodland at lower elevations, and pine, mixed conifers and giant sequoia stands at higher elevations. Difficult access to most of the area. There are no trails in Sierra National Forest portion.
