Northwest Peaks Scenic Area

Located in the Kootenai National Forest in Montana

The Northwest Peaks Scenic Area encompasses 19,100 Acres. At the NW corner of the Kootenai National Forest close to both the Canadian and Idaho borders, Northwest Peaks Scenic Area is reached by Forest roads extending from U.S. Highway 2 and State Highway 508. Part of the Selkirk Range, lofty peaks and deep valleys provide primitive recreation opportunities. There are only a few miles of trail and unpredictable weather at high elevations during spring and fall seasons limit early and late season use to only the most hardy. Alplne forests, lakes and rocky mountain peaks are similiar in landseape to the other special areas on the Forest. Tallest of these Mountains are Northwest Peak at 7705 feet and Davis Mountain at 7583 feet. The Northwest Peak Trail offers seenic views of the upper West Fork Yaak River drainage and a panoramic view of the surrounding area at its crest.
