The North Fork of the Shoshone River comes flowing out of Wyoming's Absaroka Range. The section from Wapiti to Buffalo Bill Reservoir offers a nice easy day trip for floaters.

From Wapiti, which takes its name from an Indian word for elk, the river flows 9.5 miles to the reservoir. Floaters can make their way down the river from June to August. The float is smooth - none of the rapids are rated higher than Class II.

The river attracts lots of anglers through the Wapiti Valley as well. Trout aficionados will find it stocked with Yellowstone cutthroats, plus they may run into rainbow, brown and brook trout.
