Primary Function: Maintain coastal tall-grass prairie habitat for the critically endangered
Attwater's Prairie Chicken.
Habitat: 8.000 acres managed for native prairie grasses, bordered on the E by the San Bernard
River and bisected by riparian drainage along Coushatta Creek. One marsh area is maintained and
temporary wetlands appear during rainy seasons.
Recreation and Education: Two hiking trails and a 5-mile auto tour route offer year-round
opportunities to view and photograph native prairie birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. Spring
wildflowers provide a scenic background. Neotropical migrant birds abound in riparian corridors during
spring and fall, and waterfowl and other wetland species winter here. No camping, hunting, or fishing is
permitted.
Special Note: Due to recent dangerous decline in Attwater's prairie chicken numbers, an attempt
is being made to eliminate disturbance in their core habitat areas whenever possible. Therefore, no
viewing opportunities are available at this time.
