Directions: The refuge is approximately 2-1/2 miles SE of Alturas. Signs located at S end of
town.
Primary Wildlife: Large concentrations of waterfowl, including Canada geese, mallards,
cinnamon teal, wigeon, and pintails. -- Tundra swans stop during their migrations. -- Sandhill cranes nest
on the refuge. -- White pelicans are seen throughout the summer. -- Mule deer and pronghorn antelope are
present.
Habitat: Habitat consists of 6,283 acres of ponds, irrigated meadows, natural floodplains, marsh
communities, cereal grain croplands, sagebrush/juniper uplands at an elevation of 4,400 feet. This habitat
is modified by being geographically located on the western edge of The Great Basin Desert with a
resulting severe climate. Cold, wet winters and cool dry summers are the rule.
Recreation and Education: Wildlife observation, study, and photography. -- Waterfowl hunting. -
