Castle Rock National Wildlife Refuge

Directions: Castle Rock is an island located a half mile offshore of Crescent City, California.
The refuge is not open to public access.
Primary Wildlife: Established in 1981 to protect an important migration staging area of the
endangered Aleutian Canada goose. -- Second largest seabird breeding colony in California. -- Haul-out
for a variety of marine mammals, including California sea lion, Stellar sea lion and northern elephant
seal
Habitat: A 14-acre offshore rock with steep cliffs and sparse vegetation.
Recreation and Education: Rock is not open to the public. Wildlife can be observed from the
mainland shore.
