Distance from neighboring parks
About 90 miles southwest of Bryce Canyon; 120 miles northwest of Grand Canyon in northern Arizona; about 160 miles northeast of Las Vegas; about 200 miles southwest of Capitol Reef National Park.

VISITOR CENTER
There are two visitor centers, one by the south entrance, (435) 772-3256, which is the main info hub. It also has a museum and rangers available for questions and concerns. The other is Kolob Canyons Visitor Center, (435) 586-9548 in the northwest corner.

Transportation

The Visitor Center at Kolob Canyons is accessible via Exit 40 from I-15. I-15 passes west of the Park and connects with UT-9 and 17 to the Park US-89 passes east and connects with UT-9 to the Park. The Zion Canyon Visitor Center is a short distance from the Park''s South Entrance adjacent to Springdale. The closest airport is in St. George, UT, 46 miles (74.1 km).

Inside the park, Zion Lodge runs a shuttle service to take hikers to trailheads for a very reasonable fee. Call (801) 772-3213 for information.

Entry fees and permits
The cost for each vehicle is $10, good for up to seven days. Backcountry hikers must obtain a permit, available at either visitor center; the cost is $5 per person per night.

Watchman and South Campgrounds are open on a first-come first-served basis. One is open year-round, both are open in summer. A fee is charged. Both have fire grates, picnic tables, water, restrooms and a sanitary disposal station for trailers. There are no utility hookups or showers. Some sites are set aside for the disabled. Camping for educational or youth groups of 9 to 40 persons are available by reservation.

The Lava Point Primitive Campground is usually open from May to October. Fire grates, tables and toilets are provided but there is no water. No fee is charged.

Camping is limited to 14 days and is permitted only in designated sites or in the backcountry.

The National Park Reservation Service (NPRS) and the National Park Service (NPS) have implemented a reservation window to make booking your camping reservations more convenient. On the 15th of each month, campers will have access to an entire month of available start dates -up to three months in advance (see schedule below) -except Katmai National Park. You may book reservations as late as 1 day prior to arrival, subject to availability.

Motel units, a restaurant, snack bar and gift shop are located at Zion Lodge, open all year long. For reservations call 303-297-2757. Advanced reservations are recommended.

Outside the Park: Springdale, Mt. Carmel, and the larger towns of Hurricane, St. George, Cedar City and Kanab have motels, restaurants, service stations and grocery stores. A private campground in Springdale has full utility hook-ups and hot showers. Other private campgrounds are located within 25 miles of the park. The nearest hospitals are in St. George, Cedar City and Kanab.

Weather

From May to October temperatures range from 70 degrees to 105 degrees F in the day and from 45 degrees to 75 degrees F at night. Brief afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August. Winters are mild in Zion Canyon with temperatures often reaching above 40 degrees F. Little snow falls in Zion Canyon but snow accumulates on the plateaus. Spring and fall are ideal times to visit the park. During these seasons temperatures range from 45 degrees at night to 80 degrees in the day.
