Like many high country national parks, fishing is only poor to mediocre. But take heart, fishing in surrounding Lassen National Forest is great. In the park, out of approximately 50 lakes, only 16 contain fish. We're talking trout: brook, brown and rainbow. Here's the rundown of what you'll find—

Fishing requires a valid California fishing license and knowledge of park regulations. Check with the park information office before you head out—they can fill you in on the rules and maybe give you some leads on good spots.

Boating— Rowboats, canoes, and non-power boats can be used on park lakes except Reflection, Emerald, Helen, and Boiling Springs. Power boats—including electric motors—are prohibited. A U.S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation device is required for each boat occupant. Boats must be removed from Manzanita Lake and lakeshore nightly. Boat rentals are not available in the park.
