The Havasupai Indians once farmed many moist areas below the South Rim, including the area now known as Indian Garden. Today they occupy a 185,000-acre reservation inside the central canyon. More than 400 Havasupai live in Supai, a dusty village of mostly prefabricated buildings surrounded by red-rock cliffs. It can be reached only by riding a mule or by walking 8 miles into the canyon. (Helicopters also transport goods, townspeople, and an occasional visitor.) The milky waters of Havasu Creek pass through the village, then plummet over a series of turquoise waterfalls, some of the prettiest anywhere. Between falls, the creek trickles past a shady campground (two miles past town), then continues an additional seven miles to the Colorado.
