Hiking - McCarthy to Root Glacier

DISTANCE: 16 miles round trip from McCarthy, 8 miles round trip from Kennicott
ACCESS: Road access from Chitina via the McCarthy Road. Take the McCarthy Road 60 miles to
the parking area at the end.
ROUTE: Follow the road east from the tram area to the McCarthy museum. From the museum,
continue north on the road for 4 miles to the historic company town and millsite of Kennicott. NOTE:
The lands and structures of Kennicott are privately owned, please exercise respect and extreme
caution when hiking and exploring in this area. From Kennicott, the trail continues north along the
moraine of Kennicott and Root Glaciers.
POTENTIAL HAZARDS: Exercise caution when crossing Jumbo Creek, 2 miles north of
Kennicott. Follow a small trail approximately 50 yards upstream where the stream and washout area
can be crossed more easily. Avoid walking near the edge of Root Glacier as rotting ice and swift, cold
water are potentially dangerous. Bears are present in the area.
