Mountain Biking - Lynx Pass/Gore Pass

Lynx Pass and Gore Pass are noted for their large open meadows which serve as excellent grazing cattle.- Past timber sale activities have: left a network of roads for mountain bikers to explore. Lynx Pass was named for the abundance of bobcat in the area. Sir George Gore, a colorful and eccentric hunter a .explorer, passed through the area in the 1850's. The Ute Indians used to camp along Teepee: Creek . favorite hunting area, which Gore Pass remains today for deer and elk hunters in the Fall.

The Gore Pass area provides opportunities for dispersed camping as well three Forest Campgrounds: Lynx Pass, Blacktail and Gore Pass Campgrounds.

OVERVIEW: This area offers many biking opportunities on gravel and dirt roads, many the result of past timber sale activities are still logging operations in the area, so please be careful when riding on these roads.

MORRISON DIVIDE TRAIL
(17.5 MILES)

TOPO MAPS USED: Lynx Pass, Green Ridge, Gore Mountain

TO GET THERE: From Yampa, take Hwy 131 south to Hwy 134; turn left and continue on Hwy 134 for 8.5 miles to the Lynx Pass turnoff. Turn left; continue north for about two miles. Park at the Laguanita Lake parking area.

*OPTION 1: Head north from the parking area, past Lynx Pass Campground and Guard Station. Turn left to the beginning of #1174. The trail climbs for about 7 miles to the top of Green Ridge. The trail will intersect with a series of roads. Follow signs for trail #1174. In another mile and you will come to the Muddy Slide, an interesting geological formation. Once on top, this trail provides beautiful views of the Morrison Creek valley, Rabbit Ears Pass and Steamboat Ski area to the north. Continue following trail #1174 down a fairly steep stretch to Muddy Creek. You will intersect with Road #270 (Morrison Creek Road.) right and head uphill steadily for 7 miles on this improved gravel road back to the top of Lynx Pass to complete the loop.

ROCK CREEK LOOP
(9 MILES)

TO GET THERE: Same as Morrison Divide Trail.

*OPTION 1: From Lynx Pass head south on FDR 270 for approximately 2 miles. Cross Hwy 134 and continue south on FDR 2 the fork in the road. Stay left and continue for half a mile to the Rock Creek Stage Station. This historic stagestop is on state and is in deteriorating condition. Please be careful when around the structure. Head back to Lynx Pass the way you came.

LYNX PASS/TEEPEE CREEK LOOP
(2 MILES)

TO GET THERE: Same as Morrison Divide Trail.

* From the Laguanita Lake parking area head east on FDR #263 which will climb steadily uphill for about a mile. Once the road begins to level off, there will be a trail off to the left. This is the Teepee Creek trail. Follow this down hill for about a mile to connect with FDR 263 and continue onto parking area. This is a short, but fun ride.

GORE PASS LOOP
(27.5 MILES)

TO GET THERE: From Yampa, take Highway 131 south to Toponas and the intersection with Highway 134. Continue east on Highway to the top of Gore Pass, approximately 16 miles. Park on the left side of the highway across from Gore Pass campground

TOPO MAPS USED Gore Pass, Tyler Mountain, Lynx Pass

*OPTION 1: Take Forest Road 185 on the north side of Gore Pass. Head north approximately 1.5 miles to the fork in the road (to a signed intersection). Stay right at the fork and follow Road 185 for about 4 miles. This intersects gravel road #100; turn left; head 2.5 miles. Turn left on Road 250 (south) heading down along Farnham Creek. In about 7.5 miles, this road will intersect several others. Stay left and continue on FDR 250 for 3.2 miles until it almost intersects with the highway. Turn left and head on Road 241 for about 4.5 miles. This joins Road 185; head south to Gore Pass to complete the loop.

*OPTION 2: Follow the description for Gore Pass until it intersects with FDR # 100 . Continue on Road # 100 for approximately a until it intersects with Road 101 to the right. This road takes you approximately 4 miles to Red Dirt Reservoir. Turn around a reservoir and head back the way you came to Gore Pass. This alternative route is approximately 24 miles.

*OPTION 3: GORE CREEK LOOP ( 18 MILES) From Gore Pass take Road 185 north for about 1.5 miles. At the fork in the road, stay left on Road 243. In a half mile you will come to another fork in the road. Stay right and continue west on the trail. In another 1/2 mile the road makes a switchback and begins to head northeast. There are several roads branching off to the left. These are logging roads: most dead-end and gated. Always stay to the right and you will follow Road #234. This trail is marked with orange diamonds as a winter snowmobile route. In about miles you will begin to head west. Follow for about 3.5 miles to the intersection with FDR #250. This will take you south to, Hwy 134. About 100 yards from the highway, take a sharp left onto Road #241. Follow #241 for about 4.5 miles until it connects with Road # 185. Turn right and continue on #185 back to Gore Pass.
