The Adirondacks are fantastic! Pick up a trail map for the High Peaks region. Popular camping spots - like Lake Colden can be VERY busy during peak season and weekends. We just got back from a snowshoeing trip - did Pitchoff Mtn - took us 5 hours over moderate terrain and some steep parts. Our favorite day hikes are Mt. Algonquin and Cascade. Hiking over Mt Marcy and camping near Lake Colden is a good 2 day hike. Many of the trails are quite challenging in terms of change in elevation, mud, rocks etc. But there are also the "bunny" trails. Something for everyone. Have a great time.

The Adirondacks are definitely great, and it is a large park with lots of options. You definitely have alot of spots that aren't too crowded because they are two days away from any roads or anything! They are nice in the fall, and my second favorite range, after the Whites in my home state of New Hampshire.
