These beaches are worth a trip for surf-fishing action. They are located on the back side of South Bay, near the south jetty at Brazos Santiago Pass. Pods of tarpon will occasionally show up here, but the surf is often off-color from the sediment deposited at the mouth of the Rio Grande.

South Padre Beachfront To The Mouth Of The Rio Grande

Tarpon can be found up and down South Padre Island in the surf around pods of baitfish. Eric Glass says that sometimes he runs down the beach to fish around the mouth of the Rio Grande. The river mouth is an ancestral home for tarpon that still attracts these fish from time to time.

Occasionally guides will make a run down to the mouth of the Rio Grande to try for snook. Despite pressure from commercial fishing and pollution on the Mexican side, the river continues to serve as a nursery for snook, which need a brackish water habitat in the early stages of their life cycle. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department biologists have encountered increasing numbers of juvenile snook in net sampling surveys on the Rio Grande in recent
