For exciting nighttime fly fishing, look for the lights on the water or turn on your own. The following sites are among the most productive for nighttime fly fishing.

Upper Coast

Texas City Dike

Texas fly-fishing guide Dan Lynch says he uses a Par 64 Very Narrow Spot lighting system with 1,000-watt lamps to fly fish around the pilings and piers of the Texas City Dike."Once the slack tide comes in, trout tend to go crazy for about an hour, and then they will quit," Lynch says. "Once the water starts moving again, they start doing their thing again." Lynch says he seeks areas where there are eddying currents. "This is where (the trout) will hold, in those pools, and let the bait come to them."

Lynch says he sets up his lights between the Texas City Dike fishing pier and the channel, where submerged pilings from an old pier create the eddying currents that make it a hotspot for redfish and trout.

Follets Island

The shoreline along the San Luis County Park (Old KOA Campground) on Follets Island is a popular summer night-fishing area on the upper coast. There is fixed lighting from several poles along the shoreline, and many anglers also set up their own systems. The shoreline is shallow and wadable, with a hard sand bottom. An effective strategy here is to wade out a short distance and cast to the far edges of the light beams.
