Fly Fishing the Texas Coast
Aransas Bay: Rockport/Fulton Area

Accessible from launch ramps in the Rockport/Fulton area, the shorelines of Traylor Island consistently hold trout and redfish drawn out of the deeper Lydia Ann Channel. Look for pods of redfish cruising near the bank around cuts and depressions, and cast near the channel drop-off for trout.

Located on Redfish Bay just off the Intracoastal Waterway between Rockport and Aransas Pass, Estes Flats offers wadefishing over broad, shallow flats with grass beds, oyster shells, spoil island banks, and small tidal creeks. These features consistently draw redfish, trout, flounder, and black drum. This is a popular area that also draws heavy boat traffic from nearby marinas, especially between spring and fall. A large spoil island on the north Estes Flats shoreline just down from the Palm Harbor launch ramp, across from Channel Marker 25, is an excellent wadefishing and sightcasting area for trout and redfish. Despite its ideal light sand bottoms, it is frequently passed up by anglers departing from nearby launch ramps.

PORT ARANSAS/ARANSAS PASS AREA

Since the late 1800s, when tourists from across the country first journeyed to Port Aransas by train and by boat to stay at the famous Tarpon Inn and to fish the nearby waters, this fishing and resort community has been a popular angling destination. Port Aransas provides easy boat and drive-up access to flats fishing on Aransas, Redfish, and Corpus Christi bays as well as opportunities for fishing from nearby jetties, beaches, passes, and the open Gulf. The community has a wide variety of lodging available at hotels, motels, and condos, including the old Tarpon Inn, whose rooms have been restored and remodeled in recent years.

Port Aransas is located on the northern end of Mustang Island and is connected with the town of Aransas Pass by ferry and causeway and with Corpus Christi by Texas 361. The town of Aransas Pass is located on Texas 35 between Rockport and Corpus Christi.
