by Frank Logue

Use the double fisherman's knot to tie together two ropes of unequal sizes. This knot and the triple fisherman's knot are the variations used most often in rock climbing.

* Wrap the free end of the first length of rope twice around the standing part, moving away from the second rope's free end. Bend the free end of the first rope toward the second rope's free end, then push t through the two loops you just made.

* Repeat the first step by wrapping the free end of the second rope twice around the standing part of the first rope in the opposite direction and pulling it back through the loops.

Double Fisherman's Knot

* As with the fisherman's knot, tighten by pulling the standing parts of the two ropes. The free ends should protrude several inches beyond the knot to prevent it from giving way when strained.
