This is a knot that is probably more handy for a trail maintainer than a backpacker. It is used to drag logs or other heavy objects. It works best when combined with a half hitch and that is how it is shown here. In this towing configuration, it is also known as a kallick hitch.

Wrap the rope around the log to be moved and make a half hitch, leaving enough room to tie the knot at least a foot farther down the log.

Wrap the free end around the log a second time and loop it over and under the standing part.

Twist the rope around itself several times, as shown, and cinch tight.
