Latin name: Mitchella repens
Flower: These small, white to pinkish flowers grow in pairs that are united at their bases on the end of a creeping stem.
Average bloom season: May to July
Leaves and stems: The small, one-half- to three-quarter-inch evergreen leaves are smooth, shiny, and opposite on long, trailing stems that grow close to the ground.
Range in AT states: Georgia to Maine
Most likely AT locations: In the James River Face Wilderness in central Virginia; upon Mount Greylock in Massachusetts; numerous places along the Long Trail in Vermont.
