Latin name: Rhododendron catawbiensis
Flower: Making one of the most colorful displays, the light pink to dark pink to rich purple flowers are about two inches across, are open bell-shaped, have five lobes, and grow in large and ornate clusters.
Average bloom season: May to June
Leaves and stems: The distinctive oblong, shiny, leathery, evergreen leaves of three to five inches in length grow on shrubs that usually range from four to ten feet in height.
Range in AT states: Georgia to northern Virginia
Most likely AT locations: Along Stover Creek in Georgia; around Muskrat Creek Shelter in North Carolina; on Roan Mountain along the Tennessee/North Carolina border; Rhododendron Gap in southwest Virginia; next to Thunder Hill Shelter in central Virginia.
