Little Cataloochee Creek is a miniature version of the main stream, not dominated by a long, all-encompassing single creek, but rather the result of several small streams converging within a short distance to form a medium-size trout stream. Little Cataloochee Creek's headwaters begin well above 5,000 feet, on the steep slopes of Mt. Sterling. Rainbow trout are most common in the lower and middle reaches of the stream, with brook trout still occupying the upper portions.

Tributaries of Little Cataloochee Creek which are of angling merit include Coggins Branch, Conrad Branch, and Andy Branch for rainbow trout, and Correll Branch and Woody Branch for brook trout.
Access to Little Cataloochee Creek:
Old NC 284 travels alongside Little Cataloochee Creek upstream from its confluence with the main stream to .3 mile, where Correll Branch enters Little Cataloochee Creek. The road continues alongside Correll Branch for 3,600 feet, before leaving the stream.
Trail access to the main stream of Little Cataloochee Creek is available via the Little Cataloochee Creek Trail. To reach the trailhead, drive 4.5 miles past the intersection of Old NC 284 and the Cataloochee Road (in the direction of Mt. Sterling). At that point there is a sign which reads"Little Cataloochee Baptist Church, 2 miles." This is the starting point of the Little Cataloochee Creek Trail, which, for the first 1.5 miles, travels through a lovely forest setting. At 1.5 miles, the trail arrives at Little Cataloochee Creek (the only contact the trail has with the main stream), then travels on past Little Cataloochee Creek, and at 2.2 miles arrives at Coggins Branch. The trail follows Coggins Branch 2.6 miles before leaving the stream to climb Noland Gap.
