Now check the low gear stop on the rear derailleur. While cranking the pedal again, push the right hand thumbshifter away from you. If your chain shifts between the cog and your spokes, pull the lever slightly back until the chain is engaged squarely on the largest cog. Now turn the screw marked"L" (for low) in clockwise manner until you meet resistance. Do not over tighten. At this point your rear derailleur should be properly adjusted. Check the adjustment by cranking your pedal forward and running through the gears by moving your shift lever forward and back. If the derailleur hesitates or still over or under-shifts, readjust the appropriate stop screw.

If you have an indexed shift system, it is not much different to adjust than a friction system. Have your local bike mechanic show you how to fine tune it. With an index system you should have a switch on your right hand thumbshifter that allows you to change into a standard friction system. Check to see how your shifter changes from one mode to the other because they are not all the same. If your index system isn't working when you're out in the middle of nowhere, you can switch to the friction system until you can get it adjusted.

Front Derailleur

Adjusting the front derailleur is the same as adjusting the rear derailleur, however, there are a couple of things you need to check. With your left hand thumbshifter pulled all the way toward you and while cranking the pedal forward, look down at your chain. It should be on the smallest chain ring. If it isn't, turn the left hand screw or the screw marked "L" on your front derailleur counterclockwise. At the same time slowly crank the pedal forward until the chain drops onto the small chain ring. Look directly over the front derailleur and check to make sure that the right hand edge of the derailleur cage is parallel with the chain rings. If it's not, loosen the bolt that holds the derailleur onto the frame and rotate the derailleur (without allowing it to drop) into a position parallel with the chain ring and tighten the bolt.

Now take the slack out of the cable. Loosen the cable binder bolt and grasp the cable with a pair of pliers, gently pulling the cable with a pair of pliers, gently pulling the cable until snug. Retighten the bolt while holding the cable in place. To set the high gear stop on the front derailleur, push the left hand thumbshifter away from you while cranking the pedal. If the chain falls off the outside of the large chain ring, gently hand place the chain on the larger chain ring and pull the thumbshifter slightly back so the front derailleur is centered over the chain. Now take your small slothead screwdriver and turn the "H" or right hand screw until you meet resistance. Do not over tighten. Now shift through your front gears to make sure the derailleur is not over-or under-shifting.
