Two Dunes Trail

Cross the sand from the day-use area to two enormous dunes that you can climb. One is a barchan, the other a star dune. Both are approximately 200 feet high. The round-trip covers about 1.5 miles.

South Boundary Trail

Obtain a hiking brochure from the visitor center for this strenuous 5.5-mile round-trip hike. It begins at the day-use parking lot, curves south around the edge of the dunes, and then returns straight across the dunefield.

OHV Areas

An access road for OHVs begins near the campground. Other areas along Sand Dunes Road also offer access points for off-highway vehicles and hikers.

This state park is noted for enforcing Utah OHV regulations., It is recommended that you be aware of both these rules and the areas open to vehicles. Since the sand is so fine-grained, dune buggies are the most popular OHV here, although 4-wheel-drive vehicles are okay if equipped with super-wide flotation tires. All vehicles using the dunes must have a whip measuring 8 feet from the ground topped with a flag. Vehicles must stay at least 10 feet away from any vegetation and 100 feet away from pedestrians. No vehicles are allowed in the fenced natural area. All vehicles must remain on the pavement while in the campground. Quiet hours are from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m., with no vehicles, generators, or loud disturbances allowed.
