As you might gather from the name, this campsite is located in an oak hammock. It's probably the least popular primitive camping area in the 10-square-mile state park, used mostly for overflow when others are full. There's a good side to that, though: You're likely to have to yourself thousands of acres of native Florida woodlands that look much as they did in Ponce de Lesn's day. Or nearly so. The campsite is on a loop trail. You'll hike four miles the first day to camp, then about six miles back to your car the next day, mostly through open pine flatwoods and dark oak hammocks. The trail can be pretty soggy after heavy rains, so check with park rangers ahead of time.

How To Get There

From Orlando, drive north on Interstate 4 to Exit 49. Head west on Highway 434 for about one mile to Wekiwa Springs Road. Turn right, continue 5.5 miles to the campground parking lot, and start hiking at the trailhead near the park's popular spring area. Talk to a ranger to get instructions on finding the site.

Campsites, facilities: Up to 10 backpackers can be accommodated at this primitive campsite, which requires a 10-mile round-trip hike. The only facility is an in-ground fire circle. You must carry in water and all supplies and pack out trash. Children are permitted. Pets, firearms, and alcohol are prohibited.

Reservations, fees: Reservations are not accepted, and demand is particularly high in late winter, spring, and summer. There are nightly camping fees. Major credit cards are accepted.
