Great Camping in Central Florida
Wekiwa Springs State Park

This is one of the most popular and well used of Florida's state parks, and for good reason. Wekiwa Springs provides cool, clear water for swimming or snorkeling, and its run to the Wekiwa River and ultimately the St. Johns River is a wonderful route to canoe in a bit of natural Florida that is being rapidly surrounded by the creep of suburbia. Other visitors prefer to hike on the 13.5-mile Sand Lake Trail or the shadier 5.3-mile Volksmarch Trail. Equestrians can set out on eight miles of trails, while bicycling is limited to paved roads within the 10-square-mile park. Keep your eye out for black bears, as this park not far south of Ocala National Forest is one of the bruins' southernmost outposts in the region; periodically the shy nocturnal mammals turn up in the backyards of suburbanites whose homes are quickly clogging this once-peaceful swath of the Sunshine State.

How To Get There

Drive north from Orlando on Interstate 4 to Exit 49. Head west on Highway 434 for about one mile to Wekiwa Springs Road. Turn right and continue 5.5 miles to the campground.

Campsites, facilities: Sixty sites with electricity and water can accommodate RVs or tents. Each site has a picnic table, grill, and fire ring. On the premises are rest rooms, showers, a dump station, a playground, and a snack sales. Management says all park facilities are wheelchair-accessible. Groceries, restaurants, and laundry facilities are within four miles. Two golf courses are within a mile. Children are welcome. Pets, firearms, and alcohol are prohibited.

Reservations, fees: Reservations are recommended. Site fees are assessed on a nightly basis. Major credit cards are accepted. Stays are limited to one month.

Contact: Wekiwa Springs State Park, 1800 Wekiwa Circle, Apopka, FL 32712; (407) 884-2009 or fax (407) 884-2014.
