You'll find more level, open sites here than in the other campgrounds in this forest complex, making it a better choice for RVers. Many sites overlook the Withlacoochee River, which here becomes a narrow, winding course with coffee-colored waters. Steps lead down to the river's edge. Note the cypress tree in mid-stream and the stain from a long-gone high-water mark.

How To Get There

The campground is located in the Croom Tract of Withlacoochee State Forest, Silver Lake Recreation Complex. From Interstate 75, take Exit 61 eastbound on State Road 50 for three-quarters of a mile. Turn north at the traffic light; the highway is marked as Croom Rital Road on the north side and Kettering Road on the south side, but follow the signs for the Withlacoochee State Trail for approximately 3.5 miles. Just before the interstate overpass, turn east into the Silver Lake complex. This is the third campground on your left, about 1.2 miles from the main entrance.

Campsites, facilities: The 26 sites have water, picnic tables, grills, and fire rings, but no electricity. Rest rooms and showers are available. Children are welcome. Pets are prohibited.

Reservations, fees: No reservations, but there is a nightly site fee that covers up to five people. Pick a site and the ranger will collect the fee in the evening or the early morning. Up to five people, using two tents or one RV, are permitted per site. Credit cards are not accepted.

Contact: Withlacoochee State Forest Recreation Visitors Center, 15003 Broad Street, Brooksville, FL 34601; (352) 754-6896; fire dispatch tel: (352) 754-6777.
