Buster Island Primitive Campground

This secluded spot is called Buster Island and is surrounded on six sides by water, including Lakes Tiger, Kissimmee, and Rosalie. But you'd be hard-pressed to know you're on an island because creeks, not lakes, border three of its six sides. The approximately six-mile loop trail these campsites are located on is part of the Florida National Scenic Trail. You'll pass through oak hammocks and scrubby flatwoods of pine and oak. Be forewarned that the trail may be very muddy during the June to September rainy season, so check with park rangers ahead of time. If you want to take advantage of the canoeing, boating, fishing, and biking opportunities here, do it before or after your hike, as they are accessible only back at the main part of the park.

How To Get There

From U.S. 27 at Lake Wales, travel about nine miles east on State Road 60. Turn left at Boy Scout Road. In three miles, turn right at Camp Mack Road. The park is five miles ahead in Lake Kissimmee State Park, east of Lake Wales.

Campsites, facilities: Primitive camping areas will accommodate about 12 tenting parties, but you must hike three to 3.5 miles to reach your campsite. A picnic table and campfire area are provided. There is no piped water. No rest rooms or other facilities are available. Children are welcome. Pets, firearms, and alcoholic beverages are prohibited.

Reservations, fees: Reservations are recommended. There is a small fee for camping at the park. Major credit cards are accepted. Stays are limited to two weeks.

Contact: Lake Kissimmee State Park, 14248 Camp Mack Road, Lake Wales, FL 33853; (863) 696-1112.
