Weekend Wheeling in Cleveland
Summit County Hike-and-Bike Trail
By Joseph Holmes
This 17-mile (in one direction) out-and-back trail along a mostly five-foot-wide section of asphalt is a nice change of pace from the technical riding found at Vulture's Knob. In a few spots, the pavement is lacking and has a surface of crushed limestone instead, which is still suitable for both road and mountain bikes. It is twisty enough to keep things interesting along the rolling terrain. No sections are too long or steep for even someone relatively new to biking, but it can still be enough for a thorough aerobic workout.
A trail suitable for all riders
The trail is sometimes hard to follow, since the green bike path signs are small, but by paying attention, you won't get lost. Some of the curves are blind, so keep your speed under control.
Getting There
Head south on I-77 about 28 miles toward Akron, where you pick up I-76 and head east. Get off I-76 at Exit 33, about ten miles farther, and take State Route 43 north toward Kent. Just past Kent State University, turn left onto State Route 59 heading west. Look for the left turn onto Middleburg Road. Middleburg Road dead-ends into Munroe Falls/Kent. From there, turn onto Elno. Look for the pull-off on the left less than half a mile later.
