New York City

Here's a tip for boating around New York City: Keep your hands out of the water—you never know what might happen to them. But kayaking from Manhattan out to the Statue of Liberty is one of the most amazing ways to enjoy the city. So here's a little-known program to get you out there. The Downtown Boathouse in Manhattan (www.downtownboathouse.org) provides free access to the Hudson River and offers loaner kayaks and instruction to anyone who wants to paddle the New York Harbor. There are two put-in sites: Pier 26 between Canal and Chambers Streets, Tribeca; and Pier 64 at 24th Street, Chelsea. These facilities are open during the day on weekends and some weeknights. Head to Pier 26 by 8 a.m. on the weekends and join the lottery to kayak out to the Statue of Liberty.
