Surf Cast
at Montauk

By Gary Fallesen

Fish stories like this can inspire and frustrate the angler: In the 1920s, the Montauk Light keeper spotted a school of striped bass on the rocks offshore. Legend has it he made 57 casts in a little more than an hour, landing 56 stripers. Montauk, a village of 3,000 that expands ten-fold in summer when New Yorkers make the 120-mile drive to the eastern tip of Long Island, is still a great spot to surf-cast for striped bass. The best time? After Labor Day: The tourists have packed up their sand castles for the season and schools of stripers run south from Newfoundland to spawning grounds around the Chesapeake Bay.
