Flyfish the
Catskills

By Gary Fallesen

in the Catskills.
For flyfishermen, it's like coming home. After all, the Beaverkill River, which winds through the Catskills, is the birthplace of American flyfishing. This gorgeous river first attracted attention in the early 1800s; the abundance of brook trout made it quickly grow into a fishing Mecca. And it's remained the ultimate pilgrimage, especially at the Junction Pool and where the Upper Beaverkill joins the Willowemoc in downtown Roscoe. And Livingston Manor to Roscoe, a public stretch along Route 17, is regarded as a flyfisherman's paradise. Looking to avoid the crowds? Head up the Willowemoc, the Beaverkill's less-visited twin sister.
