An Insider's View
By Ron Mader and Richard Mahler
Whether your passion is hiking, diving, snorkeling, sailing, kayaking, fishing, birding, archaeology, or caving, a trip to Central America's trio of Belize, Costa and Honduras offers almost unlimited opportunities for adventure. The mind-boggling variety and seemingly endless cycles of nature are the main event here, with starring roles played by the region's many volcanoes, as well as the 185-mile-long barrier reef (the largest in the Western Hemisphere) and inland tropical forests that have been largely untouched since the height of the Maya civilization some 1,200 years ago.
Sure, you've seen underwater wilderness, but here you'll want attach a second tank to your dive gear, since that wildnerness goes on for hundreds of miles. Jump in, and you'll be swimming through some of the clearest and most pristine waters anywhere.
Is your idea of adventurer more, uh, earthbound? No problem head inland and explore ancient, old-growth jungle in the many national parks and nature reserves. And if you thought the jaguar was just a stealth creature, impossible to find in the wild, you'd be right anywhere, that is, except here. Miles of hiking trails wind through Belize's Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the world's only park set up to protect the jaguar, an endangered species found here in abundance. Border-hop to Honduras, and you can combine bird-watching with a visit to the mystical ruins of Copan. And to get close (but not too close) to an active volcano, there's no better place than Arenal in Costa Rica. So grab your hiking boots and your wet suit, and bring your undying sense of adventure. In Central America, you'll need it!
