Take Flight Over Cumberland
By Karin Madison

Head to Lookout Mountain and take flight over the foothills of the Appalachians. Lookout Mountain lies on the southern tip of the Cumberland Plateau, near the Georgia-Tennessee border, and with its flat sandstone top, offers perfect takeoff points for hang gliders. The scenery below is a conglomeration of patchwork farms interspersed with random woodlands. Take a sunset tour and feel the evening winds propel you over northern Georgia as the setting sun turns the landscape below you into gold and orange hues. The mountain is home to the school that wrote the training manual for the U.S. Hang Gliding Association and dishes up adventures for beginners and experts alike (even the odd aerotow when the weather isn't cooperating).
