Take on the Chattooga
By Karin Madison

Tear through class III and IV rapids on Geogia's Chattooga River—think Deliverance—located in the Chattahoochee National Forest. Experienced paddlers can go at it 'til their arms ache on the Carolina-Georgia border, where section III of the Chattooga winds up into class III and IV rapids. Beginners can sign up with a whitewater adventure company in the area (see www.nps.gov) to help them navigate the dangerous chute of the Eye of the Needle, and down the famous Bull Sluice, a class four rapid made up of two falls almost ten feet high, hidden behind a blind curve. Keep your eyes open as you float. The Chattooga runs free from the Appalachians in North Carolina through spectacular scenery into Georgia's Lake Tugaloo, where the riverbank becomes a haven for all sorts of wildlife including deer, black bears, wild boars, and the odd mountain lion.
