Challenge Tarpon Near St. Simon's
By Karin Madison

Challenge the mighty tarpon off Georgia's southeast coast. The islands along the southern coast—especially the famous St. Simon's—harbor dark waters, hidden inlets, and hundreds of sandbars where tarpon come to feed during summer months. Taming these sea beasts—which can weigh up to 100 pounds—may take more than you bargained for: Just reeling them in can take up to an hour. A number of St. Simon- and Brunswick-based tour and fishing boat operators (including those run by the U.S. Coast Guard) are at your disposal. After your battle, recuperate on St. Simon's while wandering amid moss-draped oaks and quiet lanes steeped in history. Don't miss the wildlife of the salt marshes, as well as the smattering of historical old inns and plantations that have been converted into restaurants and galleries.
