O Captain, My Captain! Self-Cruising the Emerald Isle
Essentials
By Megan E. Kennedy
Finding peace and serentity.
As cliched as it sounds, the welcoming nature of the Irish is truly amazing. In fact, it's hard not to slip into stereotypes or hyperbole herethe green lush setting accompanied by the warm greeting we received throughout our journey along the Shannon was remarkable. Pulling your boat up to waterside towns and villages puts you in touch with a lifestyle and culture unchanged for centuries.
Of course, we were obliged to stop in at several pubs along the way, just to get a good feel for the local scene. Listening to live music, hand wrapped around a pint, I was consistently met with warm conversation and a jovial setting. Several of our new friends treated us like long-lost cousins, and we would spend the evening discussing local and international politics, arguing about sports teams, and laughing long into the night.
