Alpine Adventure
Maybe you can recite every line from The Sound of Music—and maybe hearing"Climb Ev'ry Mountain" makes you cringe. Whatever your take on the film, you can't deny the spectacular beauty of its setting. Think snow-capped peaks, Alpine lakes, and wildflower meadows. In the middle of it all is Frdulein Maria playing hooky from the abbey, twirling with joy and singing her heart out.

Well, who wouldn't go nuts over the Alps? They're even more beautiful in person than on the silver screen, so an alpine tour is really in order. Where to begin? The Sound of Music was shot in and around the charming town of Salzburg, Austria. Just south of Salzburg, yet lying within Germany's borders, you'll find an amazing view from the heights of Berchtesgaden; back in Austrian territory is scenic St. Gilgen—one stop on the original The Sound of Music tour (www.panoramatours.com/pagesenglish/englisch.htm).

To the west lie two Olympic villages from Games past—Innsbruck, Austria, and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Just a few miles from Garmisch is F|ssen, with its fairy-tale castles. All of these stops are day-trip possibilities from the Bavarian metropolis of Munich, Germany. And they all combine storybook scenery, outdoor adventure, and Old World charm.

Map of Austria and surrounding points

Perhaps the best part of taking an outdoor adventure in this neck of the woods is the large number of calories you'll need to consume. The elevation is high, the peaks are rugged and steep, and the horizon beckons so strongly, so sweetly. Your body will need all those liters of golden, glorious beer, the countless bars of creamy, Alpine-milk chocolate, and the platters of local sausages, dumplings, and pastries. Go ahead, climb ev'ry mountain—you'll get to stop at a mountain hut each day to rest and refuel.
