Hiking Grand Etang

Grand Etang includes trails for hikers of all stripes, from quick and easy walks to lengthy, strenuous scrambles. For a soft hike with great scenery, here are two options: Make a circuit around Grand Etang Lake — the collapsed cone of a now extinct volcano. Graced by hibiscus blossoms and wild orchids, the Lake Circle Trail can be navigated in about half an hour and offers excellent views of Grand Etang — the forest and the crater lake.
For option No. 2, hit the Morne Labaye Trail just behind the visitors center. At the end of a short ascent, take in amazing vistas from atop a viewing platform: Look north to Mount Qua Qua, east to Grenville, and south to Mount Lebanon.
If you want to do more than snap photos of Mount Qua Qua's 2,370-foot peak, tackle the trail to the top — about three hours roundtrip; you'll need food, water, and good hiking boots for the sometimes steep and slippery terrain. The Mount Qua Qua trail runs along a ridge top, then ascends to higher elevations, cooler temperatures, and a cloud forest of shorter, gnarled trees. Although the vegetation in Grand Etang is very dense, you'll be rewarded for your efforts with some spectacular 360-degree views.
