Fly Fish for Great Slave Lake's Grayling

It's a fly-fishing dream: Casting into the deepest body of water in North America. And Great Slave Lake serves up even more superlatives: Canada's second largest lake (almost 300 miles long) and some of the world's purest water. It all combines to make an aquatic factory that produces lots of very large fish.

Great Slave and other glacier-gouged lakes have long been famous for their trophy-size pike and

lake trout, but there's a growing interest in the solitary pursuit of fly fishing for Arctic grayling. These colorful fish give a good, hard fight with lots of high, twisting jumps.

It's not easy to get here, but it's worth the effort. You'll need to catch a floatplane from Yellowknife and fly over dense spruce forests and island-spangled waterways to reach your wilderness fishing lodge. Once there, you can break up a five-day fishing expedition with hikes along the rugged Canadian shield, visits to Native Canadian villages, and wildlife-viewing kayak trips on the lake.
