Ten City-wide experts provide lists of top ten outdoor activities each month
NEW YORK, July 10, 2001
In today's harried society that yearns for new destinations to explore, weekend travel has become a quick and popular means for many Americans to get away. To help them plan these short-term regional adventures, outdoor recreation and adventure travel Web site GORP.com now provides City Weekender Pages for 50 cities nationwide.
Almost 103 million adults, or half of all U.S. grown-ups, take at least one weekend trip per year, according to the latest poll by the Travel Industry Association of America, while nearly 30 percent have taken five or more weekend getaways in the past year alone.
To satisfy this national thirst, GORP's City Weekender, initially launched late last year with 16 cities, provides regional guides, outdoor recreation resources, and travel suggestions for adventures within a 50-, 100- and 150-mile radius of America's largest cities. Each city has recommended excursions for "Day Trips," "Overnighters," and "Long Weekends," with feature articles and expert advice on a wide range of activities such as whitewater rafting, biking, horseback riding, hiking and cycling trails, national and state forests, monuments and sightseeing attractions. In addition, each city links to a selection of regional travel packages including outdoor activities and accommodations.
In addition, ten city experts, or Getaway Guides, prepare unique lists of top ten outdoor activities each month. These top ten lists offer visitors ideas on short trips away from their city and choices for outdoor recreation in the area. The Getaway Guides include Lincoln Bates in Atlanta, Steve Jermanok in Boston, Peter Strazzabosco in Chicago, Claire Walter in Denver, Wendee Holtcamp in Houston, Kimberly Lisagor in Los Angeles, John Robson in Miami, Dave Lutz in New York, Tim Braun in Portland, Oregon, and Ann Marie Brown in San Francisco. GORP.com is the largest and most trafficked Web site dedicated to outdoor recreation and adventure travel. With nearly 250,000 pages of content, GORP offers a complete package of authoritative, award-winning content; a large, active community of outdoor enthusiasts; and a full-range of e-commerce offerings drawing nearly 30 million page views per month. Started in 1995, GORP offers a full-service active travel-booking feature with thousands of trips, accessible via the Web or telephone. AOL Keyword: GORP
