Gimme Shelter
Choosing a Three-Season Tent
By Annie Getchell, GORP Gear Expert
When I hear the first peepers of spring, I know it's tent season! What better way to truly relax and drift than retreating into the cozy shelter of a fabric domicile, whether it's pitched in your backyard or on a ridge-top?

"Easy for you to say," you mutter, as you're losing sleep trying to figure out which tent to buy. Rest easy, friends; the choice may bewilder, but you're virtually guaranteed happiness once you commit and just get out there.
First, you need to narrow the field. For the purposes of this discussion, we're talking three-season tents: models designed to straddle summercapable of handling moderate winds and heavy rain, but not snow loads. Where I come from, mosquito mesh is a must, as is plenty of ventilation to minimize condensation. Even then, your options seem infinite! So focus a bit further . . . .
Keep it Simple, Stupid (K.I.S.S.)
Many years ago, a buddy of ours listed his criteria for a good tent: If you can set it up for the first time, in the dark, after several beers and with no instructions, then it's a good design. Certainly, there are other factors for determining a tent's viability, but I always keep his simple formula in mind, and do in fact prefer fuss-less lodges.
Most tents can be erected within five or ten minutes, but there are occasional exceptions, like the sultry July evening my girlfriends and I kayaked to a coastal island. Not a breath of wind stirred the dusk as we arrived at our camp, and the skeeters were world-class. We popped the dome and dove in. We took turns trying to rig the fly and, one by one, failed in the face of the swarm. Our accumulated experience, not to mention our advanced degrees, were no match for the designer's convoluted fantasy. "It can't be that hard," said Mary. "My husband uses this tent all the time." Bottom line: If it's blowing a gale or threatening hail, head-scratching is the last thing you want to be doing. |
