Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
By Carrie Loranger Gaska

The first national lakeshore in the National Parks system, Pictured Rocks spans 43 miles of Lake Superior shoreline. A stunning array of sandstone cliffs, beaches, coves, caves and waterfalls, you can explore from the water by kayak or on foot along the miles of hiking trails within the park.

The giant, colorful cliffs of Pictured Rocks are an amazing sight to behold. Dropping into the emerald-green water of Lake Superior, they pull streams into spraying waterfalls, form intriguing, pirate-like rock coves, and have worn down over time to form sandy beaches that rival those of the Caribbean.

Spend as little as an evening hiking the one mile to Miner's Beach, or a week on longer trails into the heart of the national lakeshore. Camping is available within the park.

Pictured Rocks is located about four hours east of the Keweenaw Peninsula, along the southern shore of Lake Superior. To get there, take either Michigan State highway M-28 or M-94 to Munising, then state highway M-77 to Grand Marais. County road H-58 and other spur roads provide access throughout the park. Local bus service (Altran, 906-387-4845) offers backpacker shuttle service in summer; reservations are required.

Contact Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore at PO Box 40, N8391 Sand Point Road, Munising, MI 49862-0040, or call visitor information at 906-387-3700.
