Great Outdoor Towns for Families
By Diane Bair and Pamela Wright

The endless trails of Jackson Hole

What do we look for in a great family town? It's simple:
Jaw-dropping scenery
Enough year-round activities to keep you coming back for more
Easy access to guides, services, and equipment
An active, healthy atmosphere and a personality that sets it apart from the rest
That's our criteria for America's best outdoor towns for families. We know . . . you have your favorites, too. And, certainly there are plenty more locales in the country that pass muster. But these four towns (with attention to wide geographic representation) come readily to mind and, we're sure you'll agree, need no defending.

They are the authors of 18 guidebooks, including Adventure New England and Wild Encounters, The Best Animal-Watching Trips in the U.S. When they're not snorkeling with manatees, tracking wolves, or hiding in a blind at grizzly bear camp, they're hiking, biking, kayaking, caving, bushwhacking, and more often with kids in tow.
