Colorado's southernmost ski area is small, unintimidating, and a budget getaway especially suitable for families. With no harrowing mountain passes to cross, it's an easy drive from Colorado Springs, Oklahoma, or Texas. Night skiing available.

Where: 186 miles from Denver and 114 from Colorado Springs, via I-25, U.S. 160 and Colorado 12.

What's There: 1,562-foot vertical drop, 28 trails, 230 acres, one triple chairlift, three doubles, one handle tow, half-pipe.

What's New: Cuchara has added a new handle tow on its beginner slope. The mountain has also increased its children's and youth ski and snowboard instruction program and developed the Cuchara Center for the disabled.

Season: End of November to early April.

Snowboarding: Yes.

Terrain: Beginner 40%, Intermediate 40%, Advanced and Expert 20%.

Ski School: The beginner package includes a two-hour ski lesson, ski equipment rentals, as well as a lift ticket. There are 30 ski school staff members. This resort offers handicap ski school lessons through the Cuchara Center for the Disabled.
