Breckenridge is a nifty Victorian town with lift-served skiing on three interconnected mountains and challenging off-piste skiing on a fourth. There''s mostly easy-street skiing and snowboarding on Peak 9, tough stuff on Peak 10, a great variety on Peak 8 and in the valleys between the peaks and splendid backcountry-style skiing on Peak 7, accessed only via the Peak 8 lifts. The resort is Summit County''s brashest and liveliest, with abundant non-ski and after-ski options. For the first time, it surpassed Vail in skier visits — nearly 1.4 million skiers in 199899. The ski area shares a lift ticket with Keystone, A-Basin, Vail and Beaver Creek but is big enough to keep vacationers busy for a week.

Where: 85 miles west of Denver via I-70 and Colorado 9.

What''s There: 3,398-foot vertical drop, 139 trails, 2,043 acres, one high-speed six passenger Super 6, five high-speed quad chairlifts, one triple, seven doubles, four surface lifts, snowboard parks.

What''s New: Breckenridge has added the Quicksilver Super6, said to be the country''s highest-capacity chairlift — 4,200 riders per hour. The $4 million lift employs technology that allows two chairlifts to load simultaneously at two loading areas. This super-high-tech lift fittingly replaces the old Quicksilver, which was the U.S.''s first detachable chairlift when it was installed in 1981. Other improvements include a Super Dragon 2000, an awesome halfpipe grooming machine, four new snowcats and a spacious new deck on the year-old TenMile Station Restaurant.

Season: End of October to the early May.

Snowboarding: There are two major terrain parks. The park has 1 half pipe with a dedicated conveyor lift and sound system. Clinics are available.
