Avoiding Blisters

Laura's Question
I have to put together a lesson plan to teach blister prevention/care as part of the outdoor leadership class I am taking. Other than covering general basics like prevention via good boot fit or management with moleskin, are there any other creative aspects I may have overlooked? Any insight would be appreciated.

Laura: Thanks for giving me a chance to get up on my soapbox! You've hit on one of my favorite topics. Not that I like blisters — I just like helping people avoid this number 1 cause of backcountry misery.

My first line of attack is prevention: Use wicking sock liners (not cotton), try to limit your packweight and mileage when you're starting out, and ALWAYS stop the minute you feel something rubbing.

When you take longish breaks, take off your boots and socks to check your feet and let them air — if your socks are sweaty or wet, it helps to change into a dry pair. Check out our hiking skills pages for more details.

And good luck!
