Writer and naturalist Steve Jones is GORP's former Expert Mountain Biker. In the past 12 years, he has logged thousands of miles of mountain biking experience on trails and backroads throughout America.
Steve finds mountain biking a natural extension of the other sports he enjoys — canoeing, camping, hiking, and fishing — combining as many of them as possible whenever he gets the chance. Steve balances his career as a writer with his other interests: teaching at a local college and running an organic raspberry farm.

Steve has written three guidebooks covering trails found throughout the Southeastern United States: Mountain Bike! The Deep South (Menasha Ridge press, 1996), highlighting trails in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia; Mountain Bike! Florida (Menasha Ridge Press, 1997), describing over 80 trails found in Florida, from Pensacola to Jacksonville to Key West to Tampa; and Mountain Bike! The Southern Appalachians and the Smoky Mountains (Menasha Ridge Press, 1999), covering nearly 100 trails in four states. Steve's strategy for successfully surviving those miles and years on a mountain bike can be found in his book, Mountain Bike Technique (Menasha Ridge Press, 1998). Steve's writing and photography has also been published in national and regional magazines.
